In Brief

This month saw backers getting their first hands-on experience with PlexiDrone. We also saw detailed reveals of the PlexiDrone un-boxing experience, and the PlexiPack’s unmatched portability…

First Backers Meet PlexiDrone!

Up-close with PlexiDrone

This June some of our earliest backers had a chance to meet and play with PlexiDrone for the first time. This included a first-hand experience with the entire PlexiPack HS, PlexiHub CS, and PlexiDrone X8 product line.

Valuable Feedback Received

Feedback received from this experiencewas incredibly valuable.  Our team was surprised at the level of technical detail noticed and appreciated by our backers.  Everything from the ease and security of PlexiDrone’s snap-fit assembly, to our high quality electrical contacts and high performance custom motors were noted and appreciated. We thank you for the time taken to provide that feedback, and the patience shown while we refined these user experiences and features.

Backers Meet a PlexiDrone Designer

DreamQii industrial designer, Gabriel Otrin, also met with some of these early backers as they unpacked, assembled, and had a chance to ask some detailed design questions. Keeping a close connection with our customers and obsessing about improving their user experiences was a key driver in PlexiDrone’s final design.

A Close-up Look at your PlexiPack HS

Inside Your PlexiPack HS

Since not all of our backers had a chance to get hands-on experience with everything that is PlexiDrone, we would like to share their experience through these close-up PlexiPack HS photos. Every element is labelled with easy to understand icons.  Every part has its own location with ample room for carrying extra batteries, tablets, propellers, and detachable arms.

Overcoming Production Challenges

Ramping up Production

Ramping up to full production is very different than manufacturing prototypes and pre-production PlexiDrones.  The volumes (quantity) of units that we have to deliver in order to meet current orders and our demand mean that procuring parts and locking in a safe Bill of Materials (BOM) is critical to reaching and maintaining production rates.  The issues below are just some of what our team has had to overcome get to full production.

Magnetometer

Magnetometers are like compasses that PlexiDrone uses to determine which direction it is facing. Our flight controller firmware and hardware was calibrated and tested for use with the HMC5883L magnetometer. However, this model has become unavailable in the quantities required to support PlexiDrone’s production rates and schedule. Not to worry, the DreamQii development team did plan ahead for the possibility that this sensor may experience procurement issuces. The team has already begun the work needed to procure large scale orders of 3 candidate replacement units (all with better performance specs). Impact to firmware and hardware design is minimal.

9DOF IMU

PlexiDrone uses a series of high accuracy sensors to maintain flight stability. One of these sensors is the MPU6000 9 Degree of Freedom (DOF) combination accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. With the use of these kinds of sensors in everything from smart-phones, tablets, and many other devices, it can be difficult to procure these sensors to support high volume production needs. The DreamQii development team must now source a replacement sensor that is available in the quantities and on the schedule needed to support production rates.  Impact to firmware and hardware design is minimal, but schedule is affected by this change.
